Situation | access | Grez-Neuville

This double commune located on the mayenne, was born from the regrouping of Neuville, going back from IXe century and Grez whose existence is attested since XIe century.

These two names come from Latin Nova Villa in Andecavo et Greto ou Greio.

Devoted to XIIe century, the church Saint-Martin-of-Vertou is built with sandstones moëllons, known as "pierres de roussard".

Many times altered, the current building is characterized by a covered nave of a beautiful panelled frame, in form of carêne of ship, of a Gothic span of XIIIe century of three furnace bridges with retable baroque. Saint-Martin-of-Vertou belong of the "accessible churches in Anjou"

With its pace of fortress, the large mill dominates the stopping and the water level. It attests very old presence of mills, producers of oil and flour, on the island. Until 1955 (year of end of activity), it sheltered a dairy.

The connection of the two villages was carried out formerly by a bridge, collapsed in XVIe century, then by a vat, replaced by a new iron bridge in 1880. The old connection was at the level of the roadway, current barage, connecting the street of the moulin to the street of the écluse.

River tourism took over harbour activity old formerly related to the construction of gabarres for the carriage of the goods.

Today, the importance of the water level allowed the installation of a nautical base where it is possible to rent pénichettes to go up the Mayenne or to go down to the Maine.
